Tires

TKC80s do look good.

The TKC70s look like decent tires for the superslab as well as fire roads.
Regarding the 80's how are they on grooved pavement and metal grated bridges?
I have lots of both in my travels and I would love a tire that doesn't get all greasy feeling on that stuff. Are knobbies prone to damage on metal grating?

I haven't installed the TKC-70s yet because of my next big ride being all paved.

The TKC-80s wear quickly, but offer great off-road traction and acceptable street traction. On wet roads my ABS warning red light came on a LOT. I never felt any slippage or risk of falling from the tires. Probably because of the ABS and traction control.

The TKC-80 is a tough tire designed for huge adventure bikes. Our lightweight Hypers don't challenge them. Much more durable tire than normal dirt bike knobby tires.

In 6,000 miles the 5th set of tires was installed this week. What does that say about tire life and me? One addition may be that I never wear a tire down all the way, regardless of vehicle.

Looks good for a spring paved ride where it might, and probably will, rain.

Found a potentially helpful comment on Revzilla regarding the MT60 RS
I had these tires put on my '14 Hypermotard SP after replacing my Continental TKC80's (I've modified it into an adventure bike). I wanted more road grip and tread life at the sacrifice of less offroad grip after having moved away from the PNW down to SF Bay. I won't purchase this tire again though. I've put maybe 3500 miles on these and the rear is getting pretty low in the middle. I think my TKC80's lasted longer.
These do offer a great amount of grip on the road and have no issue with rain either, even at 90mph (usual CA freeway speed). They are quiet and stable on the freeway as well.
They look badass, almost street/dirt tracker like.
Overall it's a great tire for light offroading and street cornering. But there are better choices for cheaper, in my opinion.

And naturally I found a counter comment elsewhere....

In fact I've told the local Ducati dealer to tell all Scrambler buyers that I'll buy them a new Michelin Pilot Road 4 and swap that for their rear MT60 so I can put it on my Hypermotard SP and hit the trails.

Go to love the internet
One constant I found is that people are saying the MT60 wears out really fast

Ok so my online research is done. I've considered all of the options and read way too much of reviews and comments. Two seemingly knowledgable and trustworthy people here have recommended the TKC80s so I'm putting in my order for them tomorrow.

The TKC80's shipped this morning. Can't wait to get the things mounted!
I paid $156.88 for the rear and $87.88 for the front at Jake Wilson. Since I was expecting to have to pay more I also ordered a back tire for my cruiser too since it has quite an appetite for them since the engine mods. I got it an Avon Cobra AV72.

Hi guys. Has anyone fitted a 190 back tire yet? I see in the user manual they say you should stick to the 180/55 because the ABS and traction control system has been programed to that size. But the circumference of a 190/55 tire is just 1.8% longer and that of a 190/50 tire is just 1.3% shorter. Surely that can't make any difference. Please let me know if you have one of those sizes. The 190 just looks so much better/meaner :) Thanks

There are guys who prefer car tires on back, so if you want to try a 190/50 go for it.

For me, and my interest in cornering the way Ducati intended with the geometry, I'll stick with 180/55/17.

TC already is fooled by Michelin PS3 in the original dimension because it seems that sizes of front:rear tires differ in comparison to Pirellis.
TC activates much too early or even when there is no slipping

I just fitted Diablo Rosso 3 tires on my new 939. Ran them for a 100 miles then went out with again today. I feel much more confident on them, certainly feel better than the stock.

I have the same problem with the angel gt as well

Interesting, I noted the ABS kick in on a rough road after I got on the brakes and assumed I'd ham fisted things for the conditions, now I'm wondering if it's the tire dimensions.

I really liked the Rosso III but buying a new rear every 3 - 4k just didn't seem reasonable to me.

I hear you. The Hyperstrada is my second bike and I bet the tires will last me at least a year or more. This summer I'm riding my CRF across the States and the following summer I'm taking a sabbatical and continuing on the 250 to see how far I get on a RTW. So the 939 is kinda a Sunday bike for me at the moment. I love it!

I have no abs issues, but the traction control is more intrusive than it should be. On setting 2/8 it intervenes on moderate launches and won't allow wheelies. Seems off to me

I have foolishly been enjoying 2 - 500 mile days on the hyper when I can. I did a road trip from SF to Portland and back shortly after I bought it. No real commuting for me, just fun for me but longer trips would mean a lot of rear tires...

I'm not skilled enough to launch or wheelie, so I may not be noticing any traction control issues myself. Maybe the ABS is just me being a bad rider after all :-D

I suppose it also depends on the road surface, temperature etc. I currently have the Pirelli Angel GT in the original dimensions on the bike and haven't had any TC/ABS issues at all. Keeping in mind that it does take a while for the tires to get some heat in them. Just take it easy when they are cold, like you should do with the engine as well in any case ;-) I hope someone who has fitted 190/50 can tell us of any noticeable side effects, like handling changes etc
