Adventures in Hypermotard Tuning...

Or just unplug the O2 sensors and ride around with a check engine code all the time; at least then you'd know for sure it's running without relying on the O2's...

So if I don't care about the check engine light being on all the time, there's no problems running with the sensors disconnected all the time at all speeds? My bike started surging badly when the weather warmed up, and yesterday the engine light came on and I lost power (engine would still idle) until I shut if off and restarted, then the engine light was off and it rode like normal again (still surging at part throttle).

I should add that it was not fun to have this happen on the highway with no safe spots to pull over onto.

That sounds like the old 'limp mode' issue some early gen 1's had. TSB fixed mine. Search it.

It could be, but if it is, I have to bring it to the dealer to diagnose, then wait for the throttle to arrive and then bring it back for them to install. I'd like to do a quick diagnosis on my own by disconnecting the O2 sensors and see if there's an improvement, which would rule out the throttle. And if it runs fine on open loop just like all my other Ducati's before it, I can live with the light on.

I wonder why dropbox kills links like that. Maybe they time out. Here ya go: Dropbox - Link not found

I never changed the correction pump settings, so I can't help you there. I would leave that alone, and then disable auto-tune, and try this map. But keep in mind every bike is different so the correct way would be a tune specifically for your bike.

Any chance you still have the file, the link is down. Or do you have a different location?

So happy to stumble on Kuksul08's posts here. I'm in the middle of fixing my 2013 821 Hyper hard start when hot according to his "Starter Motor Discovery Taigene vs Denso. His post was so insightful, I decided to dig deeper and discovered this thread. I love my Hyper but the first thing I noticed about it was that it didn't seem to be happy unless you are on or off throttle. Cruising at an RPM less than 5K is just not pleasant. Best described in Kuksul08's words as, " "lean surging", "stumbling", "sputtering." My first attempt to fix this was to install a "Booster Plug" that tricks the ECU into thinking the ambient temperature is cooler by about 30 to 40 degrees. I noticed an immediate increase in gas mileage from an average of about 45 mpg to 50 to 55 if I'm driving conservatively (ha not often). My next move was to install a 14T front sprocket. This immediately gives the bike more low end pep and makes the front wheel much lighter for a nice giggle when you want to WOT in 1st from a standstill. I just turned 46 so my wheelie days are over. The result of going to the 14t sprocket has made my Hyper a bit more buzzy in 6th at 70 to 80 mph and the gas mileage is back down to 45. However, still no fix on the unhappy medium of just cruising at low RPM. Now I've got to decide the best fix for this. I'm not really interested in going to the lengths to custom tune my bike with spreadsheets and so forth. There is no one anywhere close to me that I know of that could custom tune on a dyno. What is the happy medium for getting this resolved? Upload Kuksul08's settings and get wideband O2 sensors? I searched this thread but don't see where to get wideband 02 sensors. This may be common knowledge or something you can pick up at any auto parts store. I also am curious to know if the upmap T800 would be an easy fix. My Hyper is stock with the exception of an arrow slip on exhaust. I've been communicating with Giuseppe Starace about his airbox but by the time I buy it and the Upmap T800 I'm just shy of a grand. He claims a 7 to 10 hp increase but really I'm more interested in smoothing the power delivery out than gains. Pic for reference and not trying to hijack.

I went the intake / T800 route and while I have no idea on the actual power gains, the bike sounds like a beast, pulls plenty hard (I've not yet hit WOT and wished for more) and it did smooth out things on the lower end. I can still feel some rough edges, but I can also find useable power down low which means I can stay in 2nd for all but the tightest corners which makes for fun smooth backroads carving. I suspect Kuksol's tune with Rapid bike will get you a bit more refined, I just wasn't interested in the level of effort to install the Rapidbike.

That's kind of where I feel like I may be headed. I'm more of a "meh just clean it up a little" as far as smoothness or I can just deal with what I have as is and be OK. It's not like it's a huge deal anyway. What kind of intake did you go with? I'd like something I can order and get within a few weeks as opposed to a few months from Italy as I hate waiting for stuff to arrive. I may have it in my garage for 3 months before I actually put it on but the waiting seems to kill me, lol.

The RB Evo (w/ Kuksol map), 14T front sprocket, intake and pipe really sharpens the low end power delivery, especially in 1st and 2nd. Up high, 5th pulls much harder than stock and 6th almost feels like the stock 5th. I cruise very close to triple digits and argue the stock HS wasn't super comfy above 70 mph anyway. Can't comment on gas mileage cause I always ride it like it's stolen. I get the fuel light around 95 miles on average. I went with the DP intake that was sold with the Termi kit for 1st/ 2nd gen, but I had a very hard time finding the individual listing for this part. Also added the MWR power kit, which simply has you cut about a 6"x4" port in the air box and mount a filter screen over the port. Search "DP intake" for details and always check the classifieds here, ducati.ms and fleabay for used ones being parted out.

Unfortunately, once I got the 14T/ 520 conversion installed, my bike developed a misfire in 2nd gear, around 8K rpm at WOT. Have not been able to get rid of it. Only thing I haven't tried is going back to 15T, which would require new chain, so not willing to go that far. A couple other members had a similar problem with same setup.

Rebelmotard, the Star.ace intake pic you show is the original RSR V1. The new cover is a bit different and includes vanes for improved air flow. I have used both and will soon be adding the new velocity stacks in my 13 821. They make a very noticable improvement. The bike revs quicker all the way to redline. The base of any engine performance mod is the intake system. You can tune and/or open your exhaust up as much as you want. Until you can get more air into the motor you will not see the potential of each other part. Im not a fan of the MWR but people have said they're it. As Gat mentioned, DP used to make a performance lid but for some reason they stopped making it. I have to tell you, it did not flow as much efficiently as the RSR. I cod get into detail but you can find many of posts here made by me as well as others that speak about why. Oh, and the old situation of is all cleared up. He is now partnered with Sprinter filters as well as Termi and has to be on his game these days.

I'm interested in how the order fulfillment goes. I just read a very long Sport Classic forum thread discussing really bad dealing with G. Starace. Hope Araitim is right about him going legitimate. They all did recognize his talents and artistry with CF. He's still banned on a couple forums. His LinkedIn says he is/was a design lead for Ducati Corse.

Well I paid through PP with a CC. If I don't get it I can always dispute the purchase. I'll be glad to post up once I receive it. I've ordered from out of the country before and it can take a month or sometimes longer. Just have to have patience but my orders have always arrived.

It wasn't a shipping problem. It was taking orders and not delivering a product. this was 2015-17, though.

I got mine, though I bought it right as the pandemic hit Italy hard so it unsurprisingly took a few months to arrive. He's pretty responsive over messenger and once shipped he immediately provided tracking and checked in with me to ensure it arrived. I think this might be an Italian thing, I bought ligthtec foot controls from Red racing in Italy (only place I could find them in black) and they have terrible reviews for shipping. They guy I dealt with was responsive but didn't tell me he'd shipped the parts via secure mail. By doing this it meant I got ZERO updates on the tracking number until the device made it through the Italian post (which is extra slow for secure mail as it has to be transferred in a armored vehicle or a safe) and showed up in NY customs. If he'd just explained that process I'd probably have been less worried about being scammed. Eh, in both cases after a little wait I got the parts as described and am happy with them.
