Adventures in Hypermotard Tuning...

I've been in southern Italy for almost 3 years and lived in Sicily when I was a kid. Mail is sort of viewed as a privilege, and not a customer right. Much like garbage pickup, if you don't know the right people or compensate the mailman, he just won't bother delivering and usually dumps it at a postal center (without notice). Sometimes, they just don't like driving to the end of a street or walking up stairs to reach your box. I don't even try to order parts through local shops anymore because I have much more success and speed (and cost, usually) ordering through US vendors. I'm talking about **** made in Italy, most of the time.

All of the shipping issues will be resolved very soon. Giuseppe was packed and ready to move to the US when the whole cobid thing hit. Now hes just waiting for the green light from the government to make the move. I had the same situation when I originally ordered my first kit. He had to make it. Once it was made the post office went on strike. I was able to verify what he was saying with a quick Google search so I was a little more understanding. One day he came to me and asked me to help collect names of the guys in the US who didn't get their parts. I posted up a thread on the .ms group and I believe here too(you can find my posts by doing a search on the .ms page) Anyone that came out and said they didn't get their stuff ended up being made whole. That was a few years back. Ever since we went through that i havnt heard of anyone with issues (other than this ***** shipping issue). Once he is in the US I think all his shipping troubles will go away.

I've been waiting on parts from the USA to Thailand for almost a month now. USPS is having difficulties. Usually takes 10 days or less. If you're waiting on parts, chances are it's not the shops fault currently.

I have to say that i received my RSR kit from Giuseppe yesterday. He was always approachable and responsive on FB messenger to my queries. Due to the pandemic, the shipment arrival was very slow but it did arrive and I cant wait to get it fixed. The T800 from UPmap also arrived and cant wait to see how these 2 work together.
To people who doubt on Giuseppe's shipments, should remove that doubt from their minds.

I completely agree with srikz. My RSR arrived in 7 days from Italy. The air filter was missing and he made it right. I haven't been able to fully test everything because I've had my Tard down with a starter clutch. Hopefully soon I'll be up and running.

There is a group buy in the works. I was going to make a post here once all the details are worked out. Not sure how long till it happens but I think soon

So happy to stumble on Kuksul08's posts here. I'm in the middle of fixing my 2013 821 Hyper hard start when hot according to his "Starter Motor Discovery Taigene vs Denso. His post was so insightful, I decided to dig deeper and discovered this thread. I love my Hyper but the first thing I noticed about it was that it didn't seem to be happy unless you are on or off throttle. Cruising at an RPM less than 5K is just not pleasant. Best described in Kuksul08's words as, " "lean surging", "stumbling", "sputtering." My first attempt to fix this was to install a "Booster Plug" that tricks the ECU into thinking the ambient temperature is cooler by about 30 to 40 degrees. I noticed an immediate increase in gas mileage from an average of about 45 mpg to 50 to 55 if I'm driving conservatively (ha not often). My next move was to install a 14T front sprocket. This immediately gives the bike more low end pep and makes the front wheel much lighter for a nice giggle when you want to WOT in 1st from a standstill. I just turned 46 so my wheelie days are over. The result of going to the 14t sprocket has made my Hyper a bit more buzzy in 6th at 70 to 80 mph and the gas mileage is back down to 45. However, still no fix on the unhappy medium of just cruising at low RPM. Now I've got to decide the best fix for this. I'm not really interested in going to the lengths to custom tune my bike with spreadsheets and so forth. There is no one anywhere close to me that I know of that could custom tune on a dyno. What is the happy medium for getting this resolved? Upload Kuksul08's settings and get wideband O2 sensors? I searched this thread but don't see where to get wideband 02 sensors. This may be common knowledge or something you can pick up at any auto parts store. I also am curious to know if the upmap T800 would be an easy fix. My Hyper is stock with the exception of an arrow slip on exhaust. I've been communicating with Giuseppe Starace about his airbox but by the time I buy it and the Upmap T800 I'm just shy of a grand. He claims a 7 to 10 hp increase but really I'm more interested in smoothing the power delivery out than gains. Pic for reference and not trying to hijack.

Hi, just sharing my situation,
2013 hyper sp with stock exhaust and K&N air filter

Since I'm still contemplating on which exhaust to get, i went and got the T800 upmap and installed the map for oem exhaust with DP airbox. Sounds much smoother feels much smoother and lighter hahah.

So hope that helps!

But i do have one question, do we unplug the T800 from the bike once the map is uploaded?? Thanks.

Heres some photos

I did unplug mine after map upload. It's not needed. You can keep it connected if you want to check battery status and other info (useless IMHO) that the T800 app provides.

Follow up:

I loaded my new fuel maps into the bike. I still need to calibrate the RB throttle voltages, but it's pretty close now.

Wow, huge difference. The bike is just so much smoother all over. It also has a healthy mid-range power bump, and the hesitation/stumble at 6000RPM is completely gone. The power is super smooth, easy to control. Never feels insane or too aggressive, making maintaining throttle in a corner much easier. It pulls linearly to redline.

I am going to do a follow-up/check log for each cylinder to verify the changes are on target, then call it good.
what are you using to actually load interface changes if your not going into the ecu?

Since I'm following this thread and receive updates when someone posts something, I'll give a post RSR / Upmap eval. I just returned from The Tail of the Dragon and romped up and down Hwy 129. The RSR does seem to give a bit more power, seat of the pants evaluation and the hesitation at low RPM has gotten much better. It's not gone completely but it is better. As the chain got a bit loose from riding, driveline lash was increasingly worse and replicated the surging I experienced prior to RSR / Upmap. BTW for what it's worth I leave my Upmap plugged in.

Thanks, i was scared it would drain the batt or the vibration would damage the upmap module or something.. haha

My battery does drain if I leave my bike for a week or longer. I'm not sure but it could be draining my battery so now that I think about it I may unplug mine as well.

That is pretty sweet the upmap disables the exhaust valve and O2 sensors. I bet that would be enough for most people to feel a big difference.

I also did the Star.ace RSR with the sprinter filter and UpMap. I used the map for stock exhaust and the Star.ace RSR and got results similar to what others have noted. Better low end grunt so I don't have to drop to 1st to take tight switchbacks smoothly and less hesitation / stumbling at low RPMs under maintenance throttle. As I put the low mount termi slip on meant for the 821 on my 939 I've wondered if the map made for the arrow slip on with link pipe might be a better bet and I'm tempted to try. Worst case it runs a little rich as I assume that pipe flows a bit better than mine which has a high flow cat as part of the slip on. Gas mileage with the existing tune has been roughly the same as I was seeing stock as far as I can tell.

There is a map for an arrow slip on? For the 821 theres only the map for termi full sys or oem :/

Yep, they have the arrow and the full Termi for the 939. To be honest I'd expect the full termi map to work for any slip on the deletes the cat, flow is really only restricted on this bike by the cat and muffler, headers seem to be the same as aftermarket, save for not being nicer metals.

Just loaded the Kuksul map onto my 2014 Hyper SP with akro exhaust

I only took it out briefly BUT- huge positive difference in rideability at low RPM and cruising speed! Will report back after next spirited ride or track day to see how it felt. I would be happy to have it feel exactly the same ridden hard, with a more well behaved, smoother around town feel. =D

Been thinking of getting the STARACE intake and filter... i wonder how this map would cope with it.. any idea?
