Installing Aprilia (Eldor) Coil Packs on Hypermotard/Hyperstrada

Thanks for this thread - after 37,000 miles my stuff fried. I have the canbus filter. Ducati is doing a good will repair and that is appreciated, but I think I'll do the coil switch.
You definitely should! It will more than likely happen again!

Come on the forums to see some peoples new mods. Learned another fatal problem with Hypers...... Well, as a preventive measure I guess its wise to replace the coils as its a lot cheaper then replacing the dash and ecu. Especially since my bike isnt under warranty anymore... I found some cheap online ($100) but they come in packs of 4. Does anyone want to go half with me on them ? Just pm me.

One just has a longer wire from the coil pack to the 3 pin connector. I had to do a splice in the middle of the wire for the vertical piston but nothing some solder and marine grade heat shrink tubing couldnt handle. I just made sure to stagger the splice. The other coil has enough wire.

Is this because you used the coil with the short wire on the vertical cylinder?

This may be a dumb question, but if Ducati used Eldor coils on older models (such as the 848), would a set from one of those bikes be more of a plug and play solution?

I ended up cutting and putting new ends on my new coils so I juts bought 2 of the long wire coils because they were easier and cheaper at that specific moment. I'm not sure about using the coils from other Ducati's. It is my understanding that the combination of coils used along with the specific ecu on the hyper is the issue(apparently it is unique to the hyper which is why no aftermarket ecu flaser/tuner messes with them and you are forced to do a piggyback system(other than rexxer and t800)) . They should have actually resolved the issue from the factory as opposed to adding a filter in my opinion.

From your original post, it sounded like you needed to add length to the vertical piston wire? So the long one is still too short?

Mine fried even with the filter. I now have a 2 year warranty on the free goodwill repair (ecu, dash, coils on 2013 with 37,000miles) so the quandry is leave the beru for a refry or put in eldors but no warranty. hmmm

My mistake, you are correct. I bought 2 short wire coils and extended one. The short wire coils were quick, easy and cheap so I jumped on them. I cut , soldered and heat shrink(couple layers of heat shrink) the OEM long wire to the short wire coil out front. My mistake. It's been a couple years since I did the swap.

That's a tough one. I think I would wait till you are close to the warranty being over if you have a written contract saying they will replace everything if it happens again. But then again, if you do the swap you wont have to worry about the bike being down for the time it is in the shop. That's a tough decision

Thanks for the info. I just bought my 4 eldor coils. Almost new off of a 2017. I will be changing mine out as soon as they get here.

Hello good morning:
My name is Juan and I write from Madrid, Spain. I have a Hyper 821 from 2014. My mechanic says that the ECU is ko and that it has a cost of 1500 €. There is no repair for it and it must be replaced by a new one. I am reading that the problem is caused by the coils and that substituting can be solved.
I change the coils before ordering a new ECU ??? Maybe that way it will be solved?
My hyper doesn't have the flitro can. What advice can you give me to solve the problem? What steps should I follow?
I leave you some photos of the messages in the box. The lights all go on and off at random.

Thank you all for the help and sorry for my English.

Greetings

Hi, Juan

Sorry to hear about your ECU. You should order the upgraded coils but also have a Ducati dealership put in a canbus filter (this should be free of charge, as there is a technical service bulletin to add it) before getting a new ECU.

You might want to try taking the bike, with the bad ECU, to Ducati, and explain that the ECU failed because the canbus filter has not been added to it. Ideally, you would have them add the canbus filter and replace the ECU, free of charge to you, then you would just replace the coils.

Also, no need to apologize for the language.
Cheers

This is a known issue that Ducati generally repairs for free. I just went through this and I already had the filter. I would ask them to contact ducati for a free goodwill repair. This includes dash, CPU and coils. Any dealer should have put the filter on. If your mechanic is not a dealer, bring it to a dealer and ask them to request a goodwill repair. I wouldn't mention the filter unless they ask. Usually I wouldn't advise such a thing, but it happened to my bike that has the filter, so I think it's sort of irrelevant.

Thank you all for the answers. My mechanic is not an official Ducati. I will call the official workshop where I buy the motorcycle and where I have passed all the reviews and I will tell you the case to see if they solve everything in guarantee. I keep you informed although now is not a good time for us in Spain with the *****-19. There are other priorities currently.

Thank you

Stay safe. Many years of riding ahead.

Just completed the change with the long lead Aprilia packs and swapped the plugs as everyone suggests. My bike had all the problems and was warranty repaired with standard parts. At the same time the Desmo service was completed with all the trimmings including new plugs. Below is a back to back comparison with basically all fresh consumables, just swapped to elder coil packs.

After a 30 minute ride:

Starting appears a little stronger. I am due a new battery but still holds a good charge.

The bike iddled with its normal (stock exhaust) satisfactory big bike V2 rumble.

Once warm a throttle blip was a touch throatier.

Pulling away (with the frankly amazing clutch upgrade recently done) was normal.

The real change was a little more urgency between 4-6k and smoother running from 6k onwards.

I don’t believe overall power is up but bike feels great none the less.

One other changes is she is running hotter. I have always been amazed how cool the bike ran and now she sits at 103 C +\- 3 as the fan starts and stops. Ambient temperature was 27 today, standard for Sydney. I read this is normal but definitely a change for me and possibly the result of a cleaner, more complete, burn also changing the power delivery.

I am now looking forward to worry free lunacy for a few years!

Jez
