Installing Aprilia (Eldor) Coil Packs on Hypermotard/Hyperstrada

OK, I have some s/h Aprilia V4 coil sticks on order. Does anyone have a theory as to why the coils can fail and cook the ECU etc.? You'd think that the ignition alone would fail, and the motor refuse to start or run, rather than the brain collapse too. Mysterious, to me at least!

It has something to do with noise and stray voltage they produce. Apparently they are very noisy electrostatically and that voltage is what causes the failures. I wonder if adding a ferrite core around the ecu wire(like you see in some computer power supplies and on some other electronics) would help. They are a simple electrical choke that is literally designed to prevent what we are eliminating with the coil swap

Thanks for that. Would you suggest a ferrite core around the connection to the coil itself? That'd be easy to fit while re-terminating the cable.

It's all a bit snake-oil, but it does sound like a good mod to do (changing the coils) to ward off problems so I'm happy to go with the collective wisdom here! Hopefully, there are no more faults waiting to surface to spoil a bike that's definitely worth preserving.

The ferrite is just an idea, I have no proof of concept but it seems like , if it works in computers and other electronics then why not here. To be honest if I were to try It I would put it at each coil and possibly one at the ecu. But, all that said I did the swap years ago. I never had a warranty on my bike and don't have the money to do the crazy expensive ecu/display replace. I have had zero issues with the swapped coils and I always recommend the mod to anyone with an 821/939 that is out of warranty. It's an inexpensive insurance.

I like your idea regarding the ferrite bead, although i doubt it is effective enough to fully mitigate the problem in the original coils. I visited a "motorcycle disasembly" company in order to source a coil and saw the 2018 Tuono have a bead installed on the cable from factory. The coils from the shop here in Sweden was ridiculously expensive so I ended up ordering four coils from germany, used and without bead. I ordered a couple of beads separately.

I found a set of four coil-sticks from a 2016 Aprilia V4 for half the price of one new, and have now spliced the Ducati plugs onto the two longest leads. I do hope that the lead colours are the same! That leaves me with a couple of spares which, with luck, I won't need.

I've also bought some ferrite chokes of 7mm ID which are only just big enough to enclose the leads. Now I'm wondering if there's a preferred location for them? Should they be close to the coil-sticks, or just anywhere along the cable? I've got quite a few, so could mount more than one on each. Oh, and I've taken the opportunity to replace the spark-plugs while I'm in there. To my surprise, only NGK makes a plug for the Hypers, and there are no platinum or iridium options. All my other bikes have Denso iridiums in them, and they are very good.

From my experience with the 2018 models the ferrite was close to the coil itself. A quick search result gave me the same answer.

"If it's preventing susceptibility problems due to interference coming down a cable then its position is not that critical. However, if it's stopping emissions getting out from a device, a better position is as close to the interfering source as possible. There is every chance that interference getting onto a cable (such as from a switched mode power converter) can radiate from the cable so, best to keep the ferrite up as close to the source of noise as much as possible."

Best wishes from Sweden.

Excellent, thanks for that! I had a vague feeling it wouldn't do well close to a heat source, but it's not a magnet. Clip-on types were all that I found, so a nylon tie-wrap or two around it should prevent the little clips that hold it together from shaking apart.

Hello guys, I have recently joined the club of fried HS ECUs in 2013 bike. So the bike had already the SRV-TSB-16-006 campaign for CAN filter with previous owner, but probably there was no replacement of ignition coil. I started to look for new ECU by posting search offers on marketplace and I have been texted by fellow from Vietnam. What he is saying is that the ELDOR IGNITION COIL for DUCATI 848/1098 should also solve the issue permanently and it is just plug and play. Anyone can confirm this? Secondly he has offered an repair of my ECU in Vietnam for around 130 $ plus shipment. Do you have any experience with this kind of practise? I have also found a replacement for my ECU the only thing which worries me is that the part number given by DUCATI service is 28642301A , and the ECU which I have found has PN 28642271A, although it is taken out from hyperstarda. Might it be an issue?

Hi dziki,

As you will have read, the versions of Eldor coils fitted to Aprilias can be made to fit if you re-terminate them. I'd guess they are easier to find than the Ducati version and maybe a deal cheaper too.

Good luck with your ECU; I'm hoping my "stitch-in-time-saves-nine" coil replacement will have protected my ECU.

Hi Nick, well I have found already few options for getting the pair of ELDOR coils from DUCATI for around 100 euro including shipment within Europe. Hope it will work ;D

I haven't personally heard of the 848 or 1098 swap, but those bikes don't have issues so it might be a nice solution. $130 seems very reasonable. Some guy in Vietnam was the dude who originally found the eldor coil swap solution, if it's the same guy I would take him up on his offer.

Installed the ferrite cores on my eldor coils just a s a safety net:)

Hi guys,

Recently I got the flashing dash issue. While the Dash and Ecu are at a repair service, I plan to swap the coils for eldor ones.
I had a question regarding these:

After receiving them I notice the coil stick is a bit longer than the Beru ones, do I need to swap the rubber tip?
Also, do I need to transfer the little springs inside that touch the tip of the sparkplugs?

Any help would be appreciated.

I used the rsv4 rf coils as it is.
No modification other than to the connecting plug.
Hope that helps.
