I spliced in a USB port and plug my satnav into a socket on my handlebars. It's a cheap Ebay USB/Cigar Lighter on a bracket, it works great.
The 'pig tail' is basically a socket with two wires that are blocked off so that the socket does not let water in. If you want a really neat job take off the 'pig tail', work out what the socket type is and buy one for the end of your wire. I'd be interested in the name/source
although I just used the clip splicing connectors which worked fine.
Oh, when I first wired it up it wouldn't work, I then checked the Hella sockets and they were dead too! Turns out the fuse had blown, I'm not sure if it was before or during the installation. It's one of the tiny fuses under the seat, and there are a couple of spares in there.
