Ducati Performance GPS Installation on Hyperstrada

Wow.. This was great info. I direct connect my ZUMO390 to the battery, which i don't like it because when i turn off ignition the GPS still charging. Will do some clean job direct connect to the GPS pigtail, hope work well for my ZUMO390.

Fitted my Zumo 340 this weekend following this guide, great bit of info, many thanks for the contribution.

Rutter, what did you come up with for the black box/transformer placement? Is there place enough behind the headlight to place it along with the rest of the cable?
Perhaps a photo how you did it?

I have Garmin Zumo 340LM.

This cable came with the GPS:

Its in there, perhaps not the neatest or roomiest of jobs but it is in there!

I'll try and grab a pic before the weekend.

I've attached 3 pictures, there is a lot of cable in there, so it is mostly coiled up and cable tied as best as i could at the time, its been on there a few miles now and hasn't come off and should be fairly easy to remove should I decide to do so further down the line.

That's great, I'm assuming that the 340lm is a motorcycle gps? I'm using a Garmin Nuvi so I had to purchase this as it is meant for a car.

Thanks for the info, I was wondering where the heated grip connections were. That will save me time digging around looking for the wires.

Me three as I have to install my heated grips one of these days. Thanks to the OP for posing these very helpful pictures.

I know that the grips have to be programmed once they are on the bike but will I have any TPS issues or anything else weird if I just install the grips and ride that way until I can get the dealer to program?

Slight problem I found the connecting wire under the headlight (red and black wire) but there is no power to it, does this need to be switched on or is it the wrong wires?

2016 Hyperstrada GPS and Heated Grips Connectors behind Headlight

Dear Forum,

I have read all 8 pages of the replies and postings on this forum as well as Wild Bill's photos which were most appreciated. I spent the afternoon in my garage with my 2016 Hyperstrada in an unsuccessful attempt to wire in a dual port USB device to what I thought was a simple solder to the pigtail project.

I disassembled the fairing and headlight verbatim to WildBills photos only my screws underneath the fairing were black and almost invisible until I got out a 2000 lumen flashlight (torch to UK members). I clipped the wire ties on both the left and right side, pulled back the black plastic protector and found 2 pigtails, one alike on either side. Mine had no label of "GPS" nor "Heated Grip". I turned on the key and then proceeded with my test light to determine which would work. I have heard the heated grip connector needs to be activated in the ECU by Ducati technicians, but that the GPS connector cirtcuit was live. To my sad surprise, neither of the pigtails had power even with the key on. I knew that it was not a blown fuse because everything on the bike, including the DIN/Hella ports was working.

Suspecting maybe the multimeter was potentially at fault or my lack of knowledge how to really use one, I then decided with the key on to simply attach my dual USB unit to the pigtails by simply holding wires together. No joy.

My suspicion is that I will need Ducati to activate the circuit in the ECU, but I am frustrated that after buying a solder gun, wire stripper, heat gun, heat shrink, flux, solder, paste, wire ties, etc. that I can't do this small project myself. I'm willing to get back into the garage and tear it apart again, but I do not want to tap the wrong harness and then have major electrical shorts or overload problems. Does anyone have a definitive photo of where I should be tapping in behind the headlight? The image red arrow WildBill points at is not the pigtail. The pigtail is obvious from the very small micro pin connector with a fused pair of wires just inserted to keep dirt/debris out of the female part of the connector.

Appreciate any guidance.

Thomas

first check all fuses physically, in the back of the bike under seat and under left fairing.
only because everything you tried is working does not mean that the fuse for the gps-cable also is ok.

2016 Hyperstrada GPS and Heated Grips Connectors behind Headlight

Ferdi,

Thanks for the input. I visited the Ducati dealership today and explained that I have torn into the "behind headlight" wiring harnesses like a madman and am having no joy. The techs assure me there is a "navigation" wire behind the the headlight with a pigtail. This is a total headscratcher to me. Obviously the dealership wants me to bring it in so they can use secret knowledge to charge me hundreds of dollars for a simple 2 wire task.

I downloaded a 2016 Hyperstrada Shop Manual which is over 1080 pages. There is only 1 singular mention of the Item 6 "navigation" wire in a wiring table on Branch 1. But nowhere in the manual is there a photo of it nor wiring diagram nor harness image of it.

From the thread, primarilly Wild Bill, it would appear someone did manage to find 12v in there somewhere, but I have not been lucky. I found the 2 heated grip wires on either side of the headlight, but they obviously have no power as they are not active in the ECU. I also found 2 other wires with 3.4 volts, but not 12v.

What I did not do for fear of damaging the electrical system, was taking a pair of scissors and cutting back the black insulating plastic around the wire bundles so to see in there better. Is the darn wire jammed in there so deep that you need a retractable lanyard and hook to jerk it out?

At the moment, I have put it all back together and am changing plans. I am going to use a DIN/Hella plug and wire leading to a dual USB port that I will navigate through the left hand fairing. I know the port is producing 12.3v and is switchable. It will not be as sexy as the "GPS" wire behind the headlight, but darned if I can find the wire.

GPS wire is indeed there. I had to open up the rubber boot thing. that gets the 12v without dealer having to activate (unlike the heated grip leads, which do).
Wish I could tell you which side the GPS wire was on (I want to say left, but not sure), but I did have to cut open the rubber heat shrink to find it.

If you search on this forum, you should be able to see pics of some of the GPS installs, showing the location of the connectors.
