"Error" and all dash lights flashing, Fan Turns on, No Start...

Hello all....I waited 3 weeks for my dealer to tell me I need a new ECM today. I got all the Christmas Tree lights and sometimes at higher speeds the bike seemed to bog down a bit but I think that is because the default run values for the ECM is maximum fuel and it is starving for air. This is also reinforced with much more backfiring when downshifting (which sounds cool) through my full Akrapovic exhaust.
Talked to Ducati North America customer care and was told that I probably would not be getting any goodwill from them and I will have to pay for the repair. Is there a certain way to get these guys to play ball? I oversee the whole NE region's ground equipment for a major airline and rarely do we have to replace ECM's on any of our equipment. Before that I worked in the auto industry and have never had to quote a customer an ECM.

Has your bike been updated for the X-mas tree service bulletin? If so, are you implying that your current issue is related to the service bulletin items your dealer performed?

I've heard of ECU being fried/baked depending on your diet, but can't recall hearing someone say it adds more fuel to the mixture. Did your dealer explain why they think it's your ECU? Again, going back to my first question, if that is the case, it should be covered and you may just have to compile the associated info and write DNA a letter outlining your experience.

The dealer did not indicate why the ECM is bad.Yes the TSB for the CAN Bus filter has been performed. Since the only experience I have with Ducati and ECM's is what I find on the forum I assumed that the ECM fries because of the stock coils. I guess there could be another issue. It would be nice to know the percentage of Hyper owners that had this problem.
As far as the fuel the bike seemed to run much better and more aggresive. It is probably better for an engine to run rich in limp mode rather too lean and cause even more issues. Just my thoughts but you know the old saying.
The DNA rep I spoke with said that my bike has high mileage. I didn't know 13000 miles was a lot.

I am the second owner. I am however part of the Ducati owner's club with the dealer the bike is at and a card carrying Ducati Owner. Like that helps lol.

Interesting. I wonder if your horizontal coil did go bad and cause this, I hope someone with a similar experience can chime in, good luck!

As of July 17th 2020 I was given the wonderful news that Ducati will be taking care of the repair. I do not have all the details as to what is being replaced beyond the ECM but when I know more I will post that info.
I am wondering at this point has anybody with this issue had to pay for it within the last 6 months to a year? I think Ducati is actually owning up to the issue.

Hello ! Light show this time in Moscow (Russia). I have a Hyperstrada 2013 ~ 22000 km. The motorcycle is prepared for long-term use. I received a gift from DUCATI-Hello disco lights! Without a reason! Not flooded, warmed up, there is a filter on the dashboard! This is how my first departure in 2020 ended - from the garage to the service! DUCATI Moscow said BLACK BOX 38510192C has burned out and if I buy it it will be clear if the dashboard has burned out. The cause of the fire is unknown. I wrote a letter to DUCATI, outlined the problem. there is an answer that we received a letter. Today they called from the Moscow service of DUCATI, they said that they refused to repair me for DUCATI funds. As for the DUCATI brand, I made a certain conclusion. Thank you DUCATI that the bike broke down in the garage and not on the highway and I didn't have an accident!

Leonid, that's unfortunate. It is a costly repair. Sad because it's a great bike otherwise. I would try Ducati Corporate because many have gotten this repaired well out of warranty. Cheers and good luck

Thanks for the support ! I am sending a letter to Ducati Corporate, the answer came that the letter was sent to the appropriate department. 2 weeks have passed, there is no other answer. A dealer in Moscow reported today that Ducati Corporate has refused me a repair. I will write to Ducati Corporate again, I would like to receive a letter rejecting them. By the way, in Moscow, I'm not the first with such a problem, the electrician said that he restored about 10 dashboards from 821 !!!

Did you sight Ducati's own published Technical Service Bulletin(s) regarding this issue? Usually to win a good-will repair request, you have to prove the following:
1. You maintained the motorcycle to manufacturers specs and can prove it
2. Can verify the issue is related to a TSB
3. Threaten to never buy their product(s) again (losing a customer is usually what sends corporate into response mode)

Good luck. Only other luck I've had is trying different dealerships. Some either have better standing with the manufacturer or now how to work the system better. I had a Honda transmission partially covered once because the dealership did so much volume and I proved good maintenance history.

From one countries capital to another hello Leonid. Did your black box catch on fire? Were there flames? I am not sure if that is the same problem that most of us have had. When we over here in this Western Hemisphere say words like "fried or burnt" this is not literally. My ECM (the main brain) of my bike was fried some say burnt but that just means there was a short on the circuit board. There was not a fire.

Hello! No, there was no flame. Only flashing lights on the dash, fan on, turn indicators flashing. I took out the battery, it didn't start anymore. The service said that the black box and probably the dashboard are defective. They suggested that I buy a black box with my money and check the dashboard ... there is a filter on the dashboard. I think the ECU went bad. They didn't say anything about the reason !!!

Got the Christmas tree today... out of a sudden. After letting it kind of cool down I went back home on full throttle mode and make it safe. Came here, and well... inserted my VIN into the Ducati recall page... and f_c_ my c_cK! 3 recalls, not 1 but 3!!! So I let my friend at the Ducati Dealership here in Guatemala know of my misfortune ( thank God he is the general manager so I expect the "GM treatment" ;) ) and help me out because it's the only bike I have now and I've been broke since the coronavirus pandemic started :( will keep all of you posted! Cheers!

I don't have any issues with my HS at the moment, apart from being in the process of replacing the starter motor, but could you explain this business with quizzing the Ducati site for recall notices?
Thanks,
Nick, in the UK

Push bike from my house, 10kms away from dealer, thank God 80% of the way it's downhill. When I first arrived mechs took all the info from it and after a few minutes my friend came out and told me that my bike was the 2nd at the workshop that day for the same reason! WOW wouldn't imagen it would be so common. And yes, another Hyperstrada...will let you know what they say to me this week.

I was very lucky that the motorcycle broke down right in the garage and made me happy with the disco lights Instead of my first ride this year, when I was allowed to go outside after the ***** quarantine, the motorcycle let me down and went to service. If he broke down on the road it is dangerous.

OK, I did the obvious thing and looked on the web for Ducati recall, punched in my VIN number, and it appears my HS has no outstanding recalls to be done. Which is not to say it won't freak out in the future, but all is good now...
