Monster 821, gets modified clutch spring!!

Quick update:

First, the show was packed. Best crowd in many years. The Ducati stand had a cutaway of the Monster engine, and the new clutch parts were plainly visible. Apparently the only parts changed were the two thin rings and the most inboard friction plate. The narrowed plate and ring inside of it are visible in the pic. The dealer I spoke to - Beverly Hills Ducati - agreed that the plates were only available as a set, but offered to contact DNA and let me know what they said about a kit. I will call him on Tuesday. And there is always Barnett.

I spent most of the time sitting on little bikes, various 300s on up. The winners were the little KTMs and the Yamaha FZ-07. The cutaways of Yamaha's engines - R1, FZ-09, FZ-07, and YZF450 were fascinating. The 07's engine is unbelievably compact; the counterbalancer bobweights actually go between the flywheels, missing the big ends.

Hey Zippy! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this up. Really appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed the show, wish I could have made it.

Once you get news from your dealer about the kit, please let me know. If he's able to make something work, I'll gladly PayPal you funds for the kit from your dealer + shipping to NorCal.

Thank you again Zippy!

update?

Hi Zippy any update on this?

I test rode a hyperstrada today and liked it but am concerned about some issues like this.

Seems like a no-brainer for them to update the hyper line with the fixes, it's a shame if they have no done so and makes me wonder if they are not really supporting this line going forward.

I think the 821 HS and the HMs are fantastic bikes. Most of us don't have serious problems and real problems are / already have been addressed with software updates and more. Personally I have had no mechanical or technical issues. I also happen to like the clutch. I switched to other levers, but that was a personal preference only. I love this 821 motor..!

Yup.

Right on! I'm thinking of going with the base model so I can upgrade the suspension to my liking. I have to say I had a blast on the test ride.

I wonder how many of us would had bought a suspension upgrade from Ducati for the Hyperstrada / Hypermotard, if only they offered one... anybody in Borgo Panigale listening....?

Yeah, I would have seriously considered it knowing how I planned to use the bike. Even more confusing is why instead of offering an "SP" version with upgraded suspension, they just went softer with all low version.

I filled out a couple owner surveys and certainly commented on the non-adjustable front suspension each time.

I would get the SP but from what I read it's setup really hard for the track and is really hard to adjust for the street. I live in czech so lots of road variation, cobblestone, etc so that isn't going to go well.

The SP is way too tall and stiff IMO for the street. I just went through that with my SMC. You really can't have it both ways. Track or street. I don't think they missed the mark with the strada suspension for street duty. Still no complaints.

By "SP", I simply meant a high-level suspension option. They could have easily fitted a nice Ohlins kit and charged an obscene amount of money

Ah, true that! So, I'm not really convinced that anti judder springs are going to solve the unpredictable feel at the lever. Has anyone ridden the new motor yet? And the other little part updates my be important in this regard.

Yes, I have a 2014 Hyperstrada and the clutch is BAD. I bought it new 9 months ago. The guy writing the article was very accurate in my opinion. Like one of the other guys on this thread, I also had an ST2 just prior to the Hyper, and that one could launch blisteringly fast. I have not been able to get a single reasonably quick launch with the Hyper. I've looked like an inexperienced **** every single time I've tried, and this is after riding the bike (commuting and 400km+ trips), for a total of 14000km the past 9 months. No, there is definitely something amiss with the clutch on the Hyper. (This is my 5th Ducati so I think I know what a good clutch should be like)

Possibly something is wrong with your clutch or your clutch cable? Not all of them have issues. The clutch on my '13 HS is the smoothest and best I have had on any brand. This is my third Duc, but have also had BMW, Suzuki, etc.

If I hurry the let-off, it tends to grab. If I am smooth, no problem. But in comparison, our 390 Duke will leave the line and go through the gears with much more speed and much less attention to technique. As will our SV650.

If you compare the parts lists from 2014 to 2015 you will see that the clutch basket is different too. So, not practical from a cost standpoint. IMHO the clutch can be downright dangerous until the motor is fully warmed up. I won't attempt to pull out into an intersection unless I can do it slowly. Not fun popping wheelies or stalling. Type of oil makes a difference too.

Sounds like you need to adjust your cable. Take out some free play and take it for a ride. Ive found over the 10k miles I've had to adjust mine quite a few times. It does stretch and thw clutch goes crap. But once adjusted again gear section and clutch control are great.
