Throttle problem/Surging

Ooops. I knew I was screwing something up. I like my highway legs so probably won't ever swap. Hence not paying much attention to the process.

Corrected. I went to a 14T a couple of weeks back and it's made things a lot more fun. Higher revs at motorway speeds are a little tiring but it's a small price to pay. I highly recommend it.

Any chance you could post a link to where you got your 14T from please.
I reckon I will go this route as well . Cheers

Been doing a bit of reading about the Rapidbike Evo as it sounds like the way I need to go.However I came across the following disclaimer below. I am just wondering if this would also be applicable to other areas of the world too. The fuel here in Vietnam is not the best , so may be an issue. I guess I will just have to contact them direct and ask the question :

ATTENTION: We do not ship to Brazil nor sell any products to customers who will operating their motorcycles in Brazil. This caution is due to different spec fuel that is being used in the country. Rapid Bike EVO and Racing module are programmed to be used in USA and will not effectively work in Brazil. For more info please contact your local distributor.

most probably this is because of widley use of E85 (85% alcohol, 15% gas) or pure alcohol in brazil.

Wow, ok , I didn't realize that's what they used over there. So I can understand the issue then better now. So Probably where I am should be ok then.
Thanks for the info Ferdi

So you put E85 in your bike? This usually requires a robust fuel system designed for the higher alcohol content.

I bought my Evo on eBay from an Italian vendor. It was such a good price that I ran the serial number through RB to be sure it was legit. The US vendor - and there is only one - does not like US riders purchasing elsewhere and installing themselves. If you have a problem you'll be directed to him and he will give you a lot of attitude before he actually helps.

Just got off the phone with my local service guy and low and behold not only do I need to get the throttle replaced but also the ECU apparently hasnt been updated either.

Maybe I found the problem?

It will certainly help. The ecu update was specifically for surging. That, coupled with the engine breaking in (about 6k miles), really smoothed things out.

The TCU replacement did seem to mellow things a bit - but I'm not sure that isn't in my head, and I'm just adapting to the bike.

One other thing (sorry if I repeat myself), the bike is really sensitive to chain adjustment - loose and it gets very snatchy. At the end of one trip the bike was really acting up - when I got home I adjusted the chain and filled up with known good gas (the single hose pumps start filling with whatever the last guy used). It all calmed down.

Another thing that's been on my mind: not all the bikes are suffering the way some are describing. I'm thinking there's something wrong that needs repair and the palliatives aren't addressing this problem. Not very helpful I guess, but I'd really get the dealers to get their hands dirty.

Speaking of dealers. I spoke to a dealer about getting the warranty work done. I didn't buy it from them. He said they didn't do appointments. Ok. Weird. But Ok.

Next he mumbled something about getting the same treatment as people who had bought from them.

So I suggested they order the part beforehand since we know what it needs. He said they couldn't do that without the bike there. It would be up to a week before they could get to that, after I dropped the bike off. Its spring, I get it.

But then he said "We are supposed to tell you it will take 2 days to get here, but usually its more like a week to two weeks." and mumbled something about thats because of UPS.

So I just ordered one for $105 instead of waiting for a freakin month to get something that isn't THAT bad fixed.

3-4 weeks to get a recall done? :( crap!

I was also told by my shop that they have to have the bike on hand to order parts. Probably just to cover their *** from a mis-diagnosis over the phone.

My dealer wouldn't even order recall parts when I called them over the phone. Needed to have the bike with them. That's a bit over the top I think.

Yeah, in my case he punched in the VIN and told me exactly what it needed to be in for. Yet has to have it to order??? I can totally see if I told him it needed recall service how hat would require my bike. But he told me!

Odd.

eBay man. Just find a seller close to you, no point buying from the UK and getting shipped all the way over.

I warn you though, this turns her into one hard-charging ************. Coupled with that Akra exhaust that you've got now (same as mine) I reckon you're gonna have a hard time staying away from opening her up wide (I hope you've disconnected that pesky flapper too). The combination has really opened her up a lot.

It's great. Very grin-inspiring. Probably very bad for your license.

This sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. But when the majority of my use is on the highway at 85mph (indicated), I don't think a 14T would be a wise choice. Too bad!

Yep our bikes are very similar now, :)
I've taken the plunge and ordered a 14t from Aussie. My mate will bring back for me.
The Akra is on and loving it.
The flapper is getting disconnected tomorrow :D
Bring on the fun :D

I was told it was because only a subset of the throttles are 'bad' and they can only be identified by a part or serial number upon inspection. It's not a specific range of VINs affected.

Yup - they have to look at the part on your bike to determine if it needs replacement.

I posted this thread: http://hyperstrada.com/mechanical-technical/3110-go-your-dealer-now-have-throttle-checked.html

It covers the issue pretty well.

Asked for it to be a sticky but no go - kind of weird as it's a constant question that arises.

It's your money, but they just call you when the part gets there and it's a 30 minute install. Took about a week in my case.

Some dealers won't let you bring the bike in for diagnosis, and then bring it back when the part is in. They are asking for him to leave his bike at the dealer while the part is being shipped. My dealer asks the same thing, and it's very frustrating. My bike spent a month and a half at the dealer last summer, in the peak of riding season, because they weren't willing to let me ride it in the meantime.

Yeah that would be pretty lame. Lots of hard, WOT demanded with this setup; it would get annoying sitting at 85mph.

Plus, it's messed up my gear indicator (not sure about speedo) so that now I have a - where 5 should be, and a 5 where 6 should be!

It actually is VIN based. I've had mine checked at two locations from the comfort of my home.

Question: what pitch is the rear sprocket, 520?
